Wellness

At Tall Grass Animal Hospital in Aurora, your pets’ health is our top priority.  Routine wellness visits are critical to maintaining the life long health of your pet, developing a relationship with our veterinarian, and in helping us to get to know you and your pet’s needs better.  These yearly visits allow Dr. Fordham to monitor changes that may be occurring and detect disease or problems in the early stages.  This can add years to and improve the overall quality of your pet’s life.

What will happen at a wellness exam?

Each wellness exam is unique and is tailored to meet the needs of your family and pet.  At every visit, Dr. Fordham will perform a comprehensive physical exam and take a complete history by asking a range of questions about your pet’s general health and lifestyle such as diet and exercise, behavior, habits, and bowel movement and urination.  Based on this and your pet’s history, he will make recommendations for specific vaccinations, lab work, parasite control treatment (such as heartworm, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites), dental care, and give life-stage specific information to your family.  In addition, he will give advice on any behavioral and nutritional concerns that arise during the visit.

What is done during the physical exam?

During a typical physical exam, Dr. Fordham will check your pet’s entire body including:

  • general body condition and weight,
  • eyes, ears, nose, teeth, and oral cavity,
  • paws and toenails,
  • heart and lungs,
  • abdominal palpation for masses and/or pain
  • orthopedic and neurologic evaluation
  • skin and coat evaluation
  • checking the body for unusual lumps or swelling,
  • body posture and gait
  • Pain assessment
  • Nutritional recommendations
  • Behavior assessment

Wellness Tests, Lab Work, and Vaccinations

Because your pet cannot tell us how he/she is feeling, veterinarians have to rely on the physical examination and detecting changes that may indicate underlying issues.  Often veterinarians will recommend wellness screening tests such as fecal and urine analysis and blood work.  In younger patients with no symptoms of disease the recommendations may be minimal where as with older pets these screening tests become extremely important. You may be asked for a fresh sample of your pet’s feces, which will be tested and evaluated for the presence of parasites.  In puppies and kittens this is especially important since many will have intestinal parasites.  You will also be given recommendations for heartworm testing and treatments that are appropriate for your family and pet.

Vaccinations are another important part of maintaining your dog’s health.  Depending on your pet’s lifestyle and history, Dr. Fordham will develop a vaccination plan that is tailored to meet your pet’s individual needs.
